Have you taken part in Veganuary this month? Going vegan encourages you to eat more fruits, vegetables and other nutrient-dense foods that are proven to boost your health.
There’s been an increase in the amount of people cutting down on meat and dairy or shunning them from their diets completely. According to research carried out by The Vegan Society, the number of vegans in the UK quadrupled between 2006 and 2018.
So what are the health benefits?
Some benefits of a vegan diet are that it’s usually considered to be higher in fiber and lower in cholesterol, protein, calcium, and salt than an omnivorous diet. Vegan diets also come with some common concerns such as lacking in vitamin B12, which is found in meat, fish, eggs, and diary. Vitamin B12 helps to prevent nerve damage and is not found in fruit or vegetables.
There are also other benefits associated with following more of a fruit and vegetable-based diet, for example studies have established a link between healthy eating and decreased occurrence of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD). It’s believed that a daily diet including leafy green vegetables and other whole foods like fruits, coincided with taking a food supplement such as Macu-Save, can aid in decreasing the potential risk of developing AMD.
