The Importance of Foot Care

“Feet go through the ageing process in exactly the same way as the face does.”

Many people underestimate the importance of looking after their feet. The average person walks 10,000 steps a day and leaves them to plod away with no foot care regime in place.

Every woman spends time and money on lotions and potions for their face because it is always on show. Feet are low priority and often hidden from view. Problems on the face are noticed quickly and dealt with, but a fungal infection or other foot problem can be left unnoticed and untreated.

As the feet get older, the likelihood of problems grow with 75% of the adult population suffering from foot problems at some point. With a little maintenance, proper foot wear, and recognising the early signs we can avoid problems and maintain our foot health. Feet are a vital part of our body; they keep us active, balanced, and on the move. As we age they go through all the same changes and the skin is no different on our soles than above our necks.

As we age, the sweat glands in the feet are less active, causing drier skin, so the older we get, the more we need to pay attention to hydration levels.

Feet have more sweat glands per square inch than anywhere else on the body. This amounts to 250,000 sweat glands just in our feet and excrete up to half a pint of moisture each day.

Therefore, moisturising your feet and controlling moisture loss is essential, not just for foot health but overall health as well. Urea and Aloe Vera are well known in foot care for being the best ingredients to hydrate and maintain moisture, and will be effective on all of your skin - not just your feet.

You cannot reverse wear-and-tear changes...but by keeping the joint mobile, you can help to delay the onset of further crepitus of the joint and the accompanying pain. Yoga and Pilates are both excellent for keeping the feet well exercised.

Looking after your feet now ensures they look after you. Most exercises utilise your feet for balance, but they still need specific work to keep them flexible and strong.

So take a moment to feel your feet and appreciate them each day - they truly are amazing.
