Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a common condition that affects the middle part of your vision. It usually first affects people in their 50s and 60s.
According to the NHS, without treatment, your vision may get worse. This can happen gradually over several years ("dry AMD"), or quickly over a few weeks or months ("wet AMD"). It does not cause total blindness, but it can make everyday activities like reading, writing, driving and even recognising faces difficult.
As we grow older our eye health comes under increasing pressure, and in particular the macula. The macula is an oval shaped pigmented area near the central retina, which protects the light sensitive cells in the back of the eye. The macula is responsible for the clarity of central vision.
The macula pigment comprises of three carotenoids, Lutein, Meso-Zeaxanthin and Zeaxanthin. The body does not produce Lutein and Zeaxanthin. The macular pigment can therefore become severely depleted in those with a poor diet lacking in the right foods.
Research shows that depletion of the macular pigment may impact eye health and vision.
